The Hon. Dr Meredith Burgmann AM

Life Long Spectator and Fan

The importance of the spectator to organised sport is mostly under-recognised and un-commemorated; however, spectators and fans give it much of the sway it has with politicians, providing the basis for its commercial appeal and mass media attention.  Above all spectators in their multitudes enable the continuing claims sports organisations make on taxpayer provided public funds - for example, the provision of stadiums.  Without spectators there is no need for stadiums.

Meredith Burgmann is and has always been an avid sports fan.  It was her sincere and passionate interest in cricket that helped shape her response to Sir Donald Bradman’s letters and in turn the evolving tone of his replies.  Meredith continues her active engagement with sport, most recently serving as an Ambassador for the Sydney Swans.
